Overview
Three-day HMTS marlin tournament in early July where the single largest marlin takes a winner-take-all purse from the base entry and 'throw down' category.
The Kona Throw Down is a high-stakes three-day event: the biggest marlin of the tournament wins the base purse and the special throw-down category outright, with optional daily and tag-point jackpots for the rest of the fleet.
Part of the Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series (HMTS), founded in 1987 and now operated by Marlin magazine's Marlin Group; series points accrue from tagged blue and striped marlin, large weighed blue marlin and weighed ahi. All HMTS events run out of Honokohau Harbor with registration and banquets at the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club.
